~てからというもの(は)
NikoJLPT N1: ~てからというもの(は)《ever since; from the time》
~てからというもの(は)is used when describing a significant change that occurred after a specific event or action.
The て-form verb attaching to からというもの(は)indicates the event or action after which something changed. The change appears in the following phrase.
An example:
彼女は結婚してからというもの、付き合いが悪くなった。
かのじょ は けっこん してからというもの、 つきあい が わるく なった。
Ever since she got married, she doesn't (really) hang out with anyone anymore.
Note that a sentence without というもの means pretty much the same thing:
彼女は結婚してから、付き合いが悪くなった。
かのじょ は けっこん してから、 つきあい が わるく なった。
Ever since she got married, she doesn't (really) hang out with anyone anymore.
The difference is that the version with というもの puts more emphasis on the speaker's emotional reaction or feelings about the change in question.
~てからというもの(は)is a pretty stiff-sounding grammar point. You'll most likely come across is being used in written language.
👷 Construction 👷
Maybe you've already figured this out:
V て + からというもの(は)
Here's another example:
30才を過ぎてからというもの、体重は増える一方だ。昔はいくら食べても太らなかったのに。
さんじゅっさい を すぎてからというもの、 たいじゅう は ふえる いっぽう だ。 むかし は いくら たべても ふとらなかった のに。
I’ve been gaining weight ever since I hit 30. In the past, I could eat as much as I wanted without getting fat.
And another, this time including the は at the end of ~てからというもの:
佐野先生に出会ってからというものは、勉強が楽しい。
さの せんせい に であってからというものは、 べんきょう が たのしい。
I’ve enjoyed studying ever since I met Sano-sensei.
Almost done:
タバコをやめてからというもの、肌の調子が良くなった気がする。
タバコ を やめてからというもの、 はだ の ちょうし が よく なった きがする。
I feel like my skin has gotten better since I quit smoking.
Finished!
Look at you, devouring Japanese lessons like some kind of... err... good student or something.
