JLPT N3: にかけては (when it comes to...)

This grammar point isn't too difficult, which means that we can have a nice, short lesson.

Yay!

We can use にかけては when saying that someone's ability to do something is (pretty much) the best.

The pattern goes something like this:

[type of ability] にかけては [someone is the best]
→ when it comes to [type of ability], [someone is the best]

Let's look at a couple of examples:

犬の訓練にかけては、シーザー・ミランが世界一だろう。

いぬ の くんれん にかけては、 シーザー・ミラン が せかいいち だろう。

When it comes to training dogs, Caesar Milan is probably the best in the world. // Caesar Milan is probably the best in the world when it comes to dog training.

“dog + の + training + にかけては, + Caesar Milan + が + best in the world + だろう.”

私は野鳥の知識にかけては誰にも負けない自信があります。

わたし は やちょう の ちしき にかけては だれ に も まけない じしん が あります。

When it comes to knowledge about wild birds, I'm confident that I wouldn't lose to anyone. // I’m confident that I can beat anyone when it comes to knowledge about wild birds.

“I + は + wild bird + の + knowledge + にかけては + to nobody (=who + に + も) + won’t lose + confidence + が + have.”

As you can see in the above sentences, we just need to put a NOUN in front of にかけては.

That's it!

Note that our translations don't necessarily have to include the phrase "when it comes to," as we see in these examples"

彼は初対面の人と仲良くなることにかけては天才的である。

かれ は しょたいめん の ひと と なかよくなる こと にかけては てんさいてき である。

He has a natural gift for hitting it off with new people.

“he + は + first time meeting + の + person + と + become friends with + thing + にかけては + gifted / masterful + である.”

タイピングの速さにかけては、篠田さんの右に出る者はいない。

タイピング の はやさ にかけては、 しのだ さん の みぎ に でる もの は いない。

No one can type as fast as Shinoda-san.

“typing + の + speed + にかけては, + Shinoda-san + の + be superior to (=right + に + go out / exit) + person + は + there isn’t.”

You're finished.

Ah, I love short lessons... ^_^
