一触即発

一触即発(いっしょくそくはつ // touch and go; extremely delicate [tense])

Although we don't normally do this in our 四字熟語 (よじじゅくご // four-character compound word) lessons, I think it would help to start out with a Japanese definition of 一触即発:

ちょっと触れればすぐに爆発しそうなこと。危機に直面していること。

ちょっと ふれれば すぐ に ばくはつ しそうな こと。 きき に ちょくめん している こと。

seeming like it will explode if touched even a little bit; being confronted with a crisis
Source: goo辞書

“a little bit + if (you) touch (it) + right away + に + explosion + looking like (it) will do + thing. + crisis + に + confrontation / encounter + is doing + thing.”

Pretty clear meaning, yeah?

The kanji-by-kanji breakdown helps, too:

一 (one)
触 (contact)
即 (instant)
発 (discharge)

In actual sentences, our translations of this phrase can vary considerably.

Here are two examples:

あの二国間は一触即発の状態だ。

あの にこくかん は いっしょくそくはつ の じょうたい だ。

Relations between those two countries are extremely tense.

“that + の + two countries’ relations + は + touch and go + の + state / condition + だ.”

ゴングが鳴る前から、リング上には一触即発の空気が漂っている。

ゴング が なる まえ から、 リングじょう に は いっしょくそくはつ の くうき が ただよっている。

In the tense moments before the gong rang out, you could cut the air in the ring with a knife.

“gong + が + ring + before + from, + ring + -on / -above + に + は + extremely delicate + の + air + が + is floating / is drifting.”

Hard to translate, perhaps, but I don't think 一触即発 is too hard to understand.

Hopefully you agree. *_*

Now let's have some fun with kanji...

Meaning of 一:one (no.1)
Heisig Keyword: one

一分待って。

いっぷん まって。

Wait one minute.

“one minute + wait (and).”

Meaning of 触:contact, touch, feel
Heisig Keyword: contact

触わったら痛いです。

さわったら いたい です。

It hurts to the touch. // It hurts when you touch it.

“if/when touched + hurting / painful + です.”

Meaning of 即:instant, namely
Heisig Keyword: instant

↑ That's an intimidating list of meanings, yeah? I think you're fine just thinking of 即 as meaning "instant."

即入金してください。

そく にゅうきん して ください。

Please send the payment right away.

“at once / instantly + payment + do (and) + please.”

Meaning of 発:departure, emit, start from, publish
Heisig Keyword: discharge

先生の怒りが爆発した。

せんせい の いかり が ばくはつ した。

The teacher’s anger erupted.

“teacher + の + anger + が + explosion + did.”

Let's review our examples one last time:

And we're done!

Congrats to you, again. ^_^
