唯一無二

Niko portraitNiko

唯一無二(ゆいいつむに // one and only; one of a kind; unique)

The word 唯一無二 is used to express that something is unique, one of a kind, the one and only, etc.

An example:

ペレはサッカー界で唯一無二の存在だ。

ペレ は サッカーかい で ゆいいつむに の そんざい だ。

In the world of soccer, Pelé is one of a kind. // In soccer, there's only one Pelé.

“Pelé + は + soccer + -world + で + one of a kind + の + existence / being + だ.”

Kanji by kanji, we have:

唯 (solely)
一 (one)
無 (nothingness)
二 (two)

So if something is "only one" and "not two," it is "one of a kind." It is "the one and only."

Makes sense, yeah?

Another example:

ここは超能力が学べる唯一無二の学校です。

ここ は ちょうのうりょく が まなべる ゆいいつむに の がっこう です。

This is the only school in existence where you can learn supernatural abilities.

“here + は + superpower + が + can learn + one and only + の + school + です.”

Note that you may come across both 唯一 (ゆいいつ) and 無二 (むに) in isolation.

Both mean something similar: "sole," "only," "singular," "unique," etc.

For example...

私の唯一の特技は縄跳びです。

わたし の ゆいいつ の とくぎ は なわとび です。

My one skill is jump rope.

“I + の + only / sole + の + special skill + は + jump rope + です.”

先月、無二の親友が亡くなった。

せんげつ、 むに の しんゆう が なくなった。

Last month, I lost an irreplaceable friend.

“last month, + singular / irreplaceable + の + best friend + が + passed away.”

Did you notice something peculiar about 唯一無二、唯一、and 無二?

In our sentences, all of them were followed by the particle の, which is common for these words:

ペレはサッカー界で唯一無二の存在だ。

ペレ は サッカーかい で ゆいいつむに の そんざい だ。

In the world of soccer, Pelé is one of a kind. // In soccer, there's only one Pelé.

“Pelé + は + soccer + -world + で + one of a kind + の + existence / being + だ.”

私の唯一の特技は縄跳びです。

わたし の ゆいいつ の とくぎ は なわとび です。

My one skill is jump rope.

“I + の + only / sole + の + special skill + は + jump rope + です.”

先月、無二の親友が亡くなった。

せんげつ、 むに の しんゆう が なくなった。

Last month, I lost an irreplaceable friend.

“last month, + singular / irreplaceable + の + best friend + が + passed away.”

I thought it was worth mentioning.

Anyway, let's zoom in on our kanji...

もん (colloquial form of もの) is referring to 者, "person."

↑ Note the different reading for 唯 here.

Meaning of 一:one (no.1)
Heisig Keyword: one

一時に起こして。

Wake me up at one.

“one o’clock + に + wake (me) up (and).”

Meaning of 無:nothingness, none, ain't, nothing, nil, not

“studies + do + time + が + don’t have / there isn’t.”

Meaning of 二:two (no. 2)

“today + の + maximum / highest + (atmospheric) temperature + は + two degrees + です.”

We've already seen them twice, but here are our example sentences with 唯一無二 one last time:

ペレはサッカー界で唯一無二の存在だ。

ペレ は サッカーかい で ゆいいつむに の そんざい だ。

In the world of soccer, Pelé is one of a kind. // In soccer, there's only one Pelé.

“Pelé + は + soccer + -world + で + one of a kind + の + existence / being + だ.”

All done!
