~たらどうですか

JLPT N4: ~たらどうですか (why don't [you]...?)

We've seen quite a few uses of the ~たら conditional form, yeah?

Here's one more: ~たら(どう(ですか))can be used when making suggestions.

It's a bit like saying "why don't you...?"

An example:

A:

このセーターは思っていたよりそでが短いです。

この セーター は おもっていた より そで が みじかい です。

The sleeves of this sweater are shorter than I'd thought.

“this + sweater + は + was thinking + more than + sleeves + が + short + です.”

B:

そうですか。返品したらどうですか。

そう です か。 へんぴん したらどうですか。

Oh. Why don't you return it?

“oh / is that so? + returning (a purchase) + if (you) do + how + です + か.”

Zooming in on our key phrase:

返品する(へんぴんする // to return [a purchase])
↓ ↓ ↓
返品したら(へんぴんしたら // if [you] return [a purchase])
↓ ↓ ↓
返品したらどうですか。
へんぴん したらどうですか。
Why don't you return it?
Literally: “returning (a purchase) + if (you) do + how + です + か.”

In case you didn't pick up on it already, our pattern is:

V たら + どうですか

In a casual sentence, you can (1) remove ですか, saying ~たらどう? or (2) remove all of どうですか, just saying ~たら?

In a very formal sentence, you can (3) replace どう with the more formal いかが, giving us ~たらいかがですか.

We have examples of all three of these below.

A:

「other」と「another」の違いはなんですか。

「アザー」 と 「アナザー」 の ちがい は なん です か。

What's the difference between “other” and “another?”

“other + と + another + の + difference + は + what + です + か.”

B:

私も分かりません。ステファン先生に聞いてみたらいかがですか。

わたし も わかりません。 ステファン せんせい に きいてみたらいかがですか。

I don't know, either. Why don't you try asking Stefan-sensei?

“I + also + don’t know / don’t understand. + Stefan-sensei + に + ask (and) + if (you) saw + how + です + か.”

A:

カプセルホテルに泊まるなら、うちに泊まったらどう?

カプセルホテル に とまる なら、 うち に とまったらどう?

If you're gonna stay in a capsule hotel, why don't you just stay at my place?

“capsule hotel + に + stay (e.g. at a hotel) + if (it’s the case), + (my) house + に + if (you) stayed + how?”

B:

いいんですか?

いい んです か?

Would that be all right?

“good + んです + か?”

A:

血出てるよ。絆創膏貼ったら?

ち でてる よ。 ばんそうこう はったら?

You're bleeding. Why don't you put a band-aid on that?

“blood + is coming out + よ. + band-aid + if (you) affixed?”

B:

ほんとだ。そうしよう。

ほんと だ。 そう しよう。

You're right. I will.

“true + だ. + that + let’s do.”

If my calculations are correct, this was our last N4 lesson using a construction with ~たら.

Progress, yo.
