Last of all, try adding ใง to the end, which will give us the meaning of "without VERB-ing."

(While ๏ฝžใชใ„ใง can be used to say "without VERB-ing," it can also be used to say "[please] don't verb." We're looking at the former in this lesson.)

JLPT N4: ๏ฝžใชใ„ใง (without ~)

You may recall that we had a lesson about using ๏ฝžใชใใฆ to state the reason for something: JLPT N4: ๏ฝžใชใใฆ (since).

An example of that:

ใ‚ขใƒฉใƒผใƒ ใŒ้ณดใ‚‰ใชใใฆใ€ๅฏๅŠใ—ใฆใ—ใพใฃใŸใ€‚

ใ‚ขใƒฉใƒผใƒ ใ€€ใŒใ€€ใชใ‚‰ใชใใฆใ€ใ€€ใญใผใ†ใ€€ใ—ใฆใ€€ใ—ใพใฃใŸใ€‚

My alarm didnโ€™t go off, so I overslept.

โ€œalarm + ใŒ + don't ring (and), + oversleeping + ended up doing.โ€

Consider how that is different from this sentence:

ใ‚ขใƒฉใƒผใƒ ใ‚’ใ‹ใ‘ใชใ„ใงๅฏใŸใ‚‰ใ€ๅฏๅŠใ—ใŸใ€‚

ใ‚ขใƒฉใƒผใƒ ใ€€ใ‚’ใ€€ใ‹ใ‘ใชใ„ใงใ€€ใญใŸใ‚‰ใ€ใ€€ใญใผใ†ใ€€ใ—ใŸใ€‚

I went to sleep without setting my alarm, and I overslept.

โ€œalarm + ใ‚’ + don't set (and) + when (I) slept, + oversleeping + did.โ€

Here, we are using ๏ฝžใชใ„ใง to show that an action (going to sleep) was done without doing another action (setting an alarm).

When explaining the difference between ๏ฝžใชใใฆ and ๏ฝžใชใ„ใง in that lesson mentioned above, we also saw this sentence:

ๆœไฝ•ใ‚‚้ฃŸในใชใ„ใงๅ‡บๅ‹คใ—ใŸใ€‚

ใ‚ใ•ใ€€ใชใซใ‚‚ใ€€ใŸในใชใ„ใงใ€€ใ—ใ‚…ใฃใใ‚“ใ€€ใ—ใŸใ€‚

I went to work without eating anything this morning.

โ€œmorning + nothing + don't eat (and) + going to work + did.โ€

An action (going to work) was done without doing another action (eating anything).

V ใชใ„ใง
without VERB-ing

Sometimes ๏ฝžใชใ„ใง is talking about a sequence of actions (the first of which is not done):

Yesterday, I accidentally went out without locking my front door.

โ€œyesterday, + entryway + ใฎ + key / lock + ใ‚’ + donโ€™t shut (and) + (accidentally) went out.โ€

Other times, ๏ฝžใชใ„ใง is talking about the means by which something was done:

ๆ‰‹ใ‚’ไฝฟใ‚ใชใ„ใงใ€ใ‚บใƒœใƒณใ‚’ๅฑฅใ„ใฆใใ ใ•ใ„ใ€‚

ใฆใ€€ใ‚’ใ€€ใคใ‹ใ‚ใชใ„ใงใ€ใ€€ใ‚บใƒœใƒณใ€€ใ‚’ใ€€ใฏใ„ใฆใ€€ใใ ใ•ใ„ใ€‚

Please put on your pants without using your hands.

โ€œhand + ใ‚’ + donโ€™t use (and), + pants + ใ‚’ + put on (lower-body clothing) (and) + please.โ€

โ†‘ Not sure what situation our poor listener is in, but I don't envy him.

I don't think we really need to make any differentiation between these two uses. Just learning it as "without VERB-ing" always seemed to serve me just fine. But yeah, there are some slightly varying nuances to the meaning, I suppose.

Another example:

Today my wife went to work without doing her makeup.

โ€œwife + ใฏ + today, + makeup + ใ‚’ + don't do (and) + work / job + ใซ + went.โ€

Finally, note that our translation will not always use the word "without."

Sometimes it will be more natural to say "instead of," for example:

Today I walked to school instead of taking the train.

โ€œtoday + ใฏ + train + ใซ + donโ€™t ride (and), + walk (and) + school + ใซ + went.โ€

You may recall that we've already studied a grammar point utilizing ๏ฝžใชใ„ใง๏ผšJLPT N4: ๏ฝžใชใ„ใงใŠใ.

In that lesson, we saw sentences like this:

Iโ€™m not gonna sleep tonight so that Iโ€™ll be able to sleep on the plane tomorrow.

โ€œtomorrow + airplane + ใง + can sleep + ใ‚ˆใ†ใซ (so that), + today + ใฏ + donโ€™t sleep (and) + letโ€™s do in advance.โ€

If you're only going to review one lesson today, though, I'd look at the one mentioned earlier: JLPT N4: ๏ฝžใชใใฆ (since).

It can be easy to mix up ๏ฝžใชใใฆ and ๏ฝžใชใ„ใง.

There is also another grammatical construction that is almost identical to ๏ฝžใชใ„ใง, which is ๏ฝžใšใซ. We'll be covering that in the very next lesson!
